This typical Pannonian town lies in south-western Banat, just a few kilometres from Belgrade, and is surrounded by the Danube, Tamis and Nadela rivers. Although it is a great industrial centre, that has lots on its menu, exciting night life and a rich cultural offer, Pancevo is a true jewel of archaeology. Namely, Pancevo and its surrounding area is abundant with material proofs and traces of human existence ever since prehistoric times, throughout the whole history of civilisation.
Cultural and Historic Sights
Voilovica monastery (16th century), “Uspenska” orthodox church, with the baroque style icons of Konstantin Danilo, “Preobrazenska” church in post-Byzantine style, with icons made by Uros Predic, the church in Omoljica.
Pancevo is home to one of the oldest museums in Vojvodina (1923), and to the Gallery of modern art, the Gallery of sacred and spiritual art, and to the Cultural centre of Pancevo.
Apart from the International Pancevo carnival, where you can attend various concerts, DJ nights and carnival parties, the municipality of Pancevo also hosts “Slaninijada” a festival of bacon in Kacarevo, that gathers more than a 100.000 people annually, “Pancevacki paorski dani” – a festival dedicated to the life in rural areas, the Underwater film and photography festival, the International festival of comic books grrr! Ex teatar fest, Bike weekend, “Fijakerijada” – a festival of coaches and carriages, Rock festival, Jazz festival, and many other manifestations.
Aside from the island of “Forkontumac“, the most attractive picnic and leisure site is Deliblatska pescara, or Deliblato sand, which partially lies within the municipality of Pancevo. Deliblatska Pescara is the largest sandy terrain in Europe, once part of a vast prehistoric desert. It originated from the withdrawal of the Pannonian Sea. Often, it is also referred to as “the European Sahara” and “the oldest desert in Europe” and it was proclaimed to be a Special Natural Reserve. It is also an exclusive hunting area.
