The 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia from 1 July to 12 July

Arena Belgrade Serbia Universiade 09The 2009 Summer Universiade, the XXV Summer Universiade are due to be celebrated in Belgrade, Serbia from 1 July to 12 July 2009. The event will also be organised by a range of co-host cities mostly in Vojvodina (Northern Serbia), close to Belgrade. It will be the largest sporting event ever to be organised by the city.


The 2009 Summer Universiade will take place in 69 venues across Belgrade and near by cities Pancevo, Obrenovac, Smederevo, Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Zemun and Indija. Obrenovac will host the water polo and volleyball competition, Indija will host the basketball competition, Novi Sad will host the athletics and volleyball while Pancevo will host basketball and Zrenjanin will host the swimming.

The opening and closing ceremonies will take place at the Belgrade Arena with a capacity of 20.000. A range of sports halls have undergone intense reconstruction to meet standards for the Universiade games. A number of venues are also being newly constructed.

University Village

The University Village will be home to all athletes participating at the 2009 Summer Universiade games. Belville complex consists of a residential area comprising 120.000m², commercial and business facilities comprising 34.800m² and educational facilities comprising 6.100m².

It is located in New Belgrade with the closest venues to it being Belgrade Arena (basketball and table tennis), EXPO XXI (wrestling and taekwondo) and TK Gazela (tennis).
