Bitef - 42nd Belgrade International Theatre Festival

15th - 28th September 2008, Belgrade

Bitef festival BelgradeBitef (Belgrade International Theatre Festival) was founded in 1967, and over the past four decades it has continually followed and supported the latest theatre trends, thus becoming one of the biggest and the most important European festivals. It is one of few festivals that covers both, experimental and traditional forms.

The festival sucessfully survived the revolutionary and turbulent Sixties and Seventies, and during the Eighties and Nineties, Bitef has presented the highest achievements of the post-modern theatre and dance. In the first decade of the 21st century, Bitef presents the original and innovative productions of the world mainstream theatre, the performances of post-dramatic, non verbal expression, as well as those completed with new technologies, thus opening its doors to the virtual reality of cyber theatre.

The main motif and designation of this year’s Bitef is “Tragicomedy - Tragedy of Our Times”. The plays will be performed in Sava Center, National Theatre in Belgrade, Atelje 212, Yugoslav Drama Theatre, Terazije Theatre as well as other venues across Belgrade. This year too, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy various and carefully chosen plays and performances.

The main program, which consists of plays that are in the festival’s official selecion, features productions such as “More or less infinity”, by Phil Soltanoff, “Oedipus Rex”, by Vida Ognjenovic, “Don Giovanni” by Bojana Cvejic, and “The Persians” by Dimiter Gotscheff. The additional program is comprised of two categories, the Showcase and the Special programme, where plays like “Will you ever be happy again?”, by Sanja Mitrovic, “Woman-Bomb”, by Bojan Djordjev, and “Gathering place” by Andras Urban will be performed.

On the 29th of September, Novi Sad, that is National theatre of Novi Sad, will host a production by Michael Lessac “Truth in translation”.
