Belgrade Zoo
Belgrade Zoo is situated in the very centre of Serbian capital, thus occupying one of the most attractive city locations - the Kalemegdan park. Established in 1936, it is known as the ZOO of good hope, and one of the oldest urban animal kingdoms in Europe.
Although it spreads across a modest area of 7 ha, this institution has a remarkable collection of animals. There are about 2.000 animal specimens currently living in the zoo, that is about 270 species, and their number is increasing almost on daily basis.
Today, in addition to animals that are undisputedly its biggest attraction, the beauty of Belgrade zoo is enhanced by numerous structures, fountains and sculptures, among which, the statue dedicated to a monkey certainly stands out. Its name was Sami and He was the first chimpanzee that ever lived in this animal park. A special feature of the zoo is its section designed for baby animals.
Over the past decades, Belgrade zoo became an integral part of the city's cultural heritage, being a place of amiable atmosphere with lots of stories to tell. Quite often, it happens that a cub abandoned by its mother, finds shelter and love in cozy fur of an entirely different species. This is a zoo where dogs adopt cats, and a zoo that survived all wars. After all, it is the zoo of good hope.
The zoo is open for visitors every day, from 8 am to 5 pm during winter time, and from 8 am until half past 9 in the evening when warmer weather arrives.
