Danube – the river that connects the east and the west
All those who have sailed the Danube at least once in their lives must fall in love with this river. There is no river in Europe with such diverse landscape and historical sites.
The Danube flows past magnificent fortresses in Petrovaradin, Smederevo, Golubac and medieval monasteries. It is surrounded by stunning landscapes, national parks, vineyards, orchards, fishing spots, dense vegetation on river isles, sandbanks, coastal lakes... Dense forests, magnificent gorges and valleys are rare oasis of flora and fauna. Many settlements of great cultural importance, Roman fortifications and dynamic modern cities such as Belgrade and Novi Sad lie in perfect harmony along its river banks.
The Danube is not just a river. It is a world of exciting natural beauties, the custodian of the oldest civilisations. Landscape constantly changes from Panonian Plain in the north to Djerdap, the biggest river gorge in Europe. In Serbia the Danube reaches its top force which is a special reason to travel by the Danube particularly through Serbia. A breathtaking attraction is the pass through Djerdap gorge between the Carpathian and the Balkan mountain ranges as well as a place called «Trajan's Plaque» where this Roman emperor crossed the Danube.
The Danube connects more than 80 million people in ten countries who speak more than ten languages and belong to different religions, cherish their historical inheritance, art, customs, myths and legends.
