Zemun - a town floating on water

Welcome to Zemun

Zemun Danube SavaThis, once independent settlement, whose name was derived from the word “zemlja” meaning “earth”, is conveniently positioned on the right bank of the river Danube, and on the very border with the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina. The story of Zemun travels all the way back to the “copper age”, and throughout history Zemun was under Byzantine, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and finally Serbian rule. Ever since 1934, it is regarded as an integral part of Belgrade. Nowadays, numerous historical monuments stand as proofs of its attractive position, while this “town in the city” continues its development into a modern settlement with quite a rich tourist offer.

Indeed, Zemun has all the right reasons for showing-off. Starting with cultural and historical sites, such as the Millenium Tower, through fantastic fishing areas, rafts, floating or non-floating restaurants. It is also home to the "Madlenijanum" theatre and opera house, famous cafés with even more famous gastronomic wonders, galleries, and finally, shops where long-forgotten, decorative or usable objects are being manufactured.

Zemun surroundings

Since Zemun once had an internationally famous European port, the old tradition of hospitality is still present on its shore, thus the Zemun quay became an ideal place for city escape or a side stop to all those cruising the Danube on their way to the Black sea. Also, Zemun can be proud of its almost untouched oasis, a local beach called Lido, situated on the Big war island.
