Viminacium
Viminacium - Town of old roman empire and a military camp
It was a military camp and the capital of a Roman province Upper Mesia. It is situated 4 km from the confluence of the Mlava into the Danube and 12 km from Pozarevac. The most important remains of the town lie on the right bank of the Mlava where once were a military camp and a settlement from late I century. A Christ's monogram was discovered from II century was discovered in Viminacium representing the oldest proof of early Christianity in this region.

In Viminacium there are emperor Hostelian's mausoleum, temples, thermal baths, nort gate of the military camp, aquaduct and a recently discovered Roman pantheon and amphitheater. The importance of Viminacium is its extraordinary strategic position for defense of northern borders of the Roman Empire, a complex of transport communications and trade. There were small trading and craftsmen settlements next to the camp.
A settlement on the left bank of the Mlava became a city in the first half of II century during the reign of Hadrian whilst Viminacium becomes a colony during the reign of Gordian III. It was granted the right for copper coin minting in 239 A.D. The Huns destroy the city in V century while Justinian reconstrucs Viminacium in 535 building an additional small military fortification.
Traces of that settlement could still be seen in XIX century with wide streets, squares, theaters, baths, plumbing and city walls.
Nowadays, the only remains left are in National museums in Pozarevac and Belgrade: marble sculptures, tombstones and sarcophagus, jewellry and pottery.
At the site there are expert guides all year round and a dozen of Roman carriages. There is a Roman tavern to enjoy a drink or two.
Souvenir shops sell wine pottery, jewellry... Many tourists from all over the world have visited Viminacium by the Danube.
